A Hanfu fashion Wonderland

It all started with our multicultural identity. Spending my childhood in South Africa and China, and later in the US during my young adulthood, I found it hard to identify myself with any community. I'm like sprawling duckweed wandering in different parts of the earth but can barely blend in any of them. However, with my passion for fashion and the rise of Hanfu fashion among Asian communities around the world, I realize it would be a great opportunity to map my identity confusion to a fusion between modern and traditional styles in clothing and makeup. Here I present a photography project that Yuki Huang and I worked on to reveal our identity struggle.

In this project, Hanfu is not necessarily clothing, it is a style that can be expressed with outfits, makeup, or even postures. Here we are exploring the extent that Hanfu can be implemented in our modern style experimentally.

Another highlight of our project is that we are only using fast fashion apparel such as H&M and Forever 21 to create our looks apart from Hanfu clothing.

Because we are living in a chaotic period with information overload every day, we are hoping our generation can build and express our new identity through outfits and styles more strongly instead of drifting with the time wave.
